The Light We Carry by Michelle Obama | Amazon

The Light We Carry, is the second book from former First Lady Michelle Obama. Her latest work did not disappoint. As expected, the book was filled with the wisdom many have come to know and appreciate about Michelle Obama. The book featured descriptions from Michelle Obama’s experiences with uncertainty and the tools she has used over the years to manage that uncertainty. One of the tools she mentioned is learning to appreciate balance. She also shared a concept of being comfortably afraid. She wrote about the importance of connection, friendships, and how they illustrate the power of having others alongside you. Mrs. Obama acknowledged that one of her most valuable tools to overcome uncertainty and hard times is to find and appreciate the light inside others.

The theme of light is communicated continuously throughout the book through memorable teachings such as the importance of owning your own story, in turn, helping others to see the light within you. She highlighted that you first have to be a light within yourself. She emphasized the immeasurable feeling she felt of being First Lady and having the opportunity to be a light for so many children. Mrs. Obama used some of the book to discuss her marriage to Barack Obama. She wrote about the importance of finding someone who will do the work with you, as it relates to marriage. She discussed the adjustments, compromises, and sacrifices both she and Barack have made over the years to have a lasting marriage. The latter part of the book dissects her now famous quote “When they go low, we go high”. She explained how she applies that phrase to all aspects of her life. The Light We Carry is truly inspiring and a must read.
