Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone by Brene Brown | Amazon

Braving the Wilderness is another brilliant book by New York Times Bestselling Author, Brene Brown. This book explores the often unspoken topic of “belonging”. It discusses what true belonging really is and how it is determined. Through Brene’s research and personal experience, she describes true belonging as something that doesn’t require you to change who you are, it requires you to be who you are. A chance encounter with Maya Angelou led Brene to fully embrace the topic of belonging. Maya Angelou gave Brene the advice “to not be moved”. Brene discusses her struggle with initially understanding Maya Angelou’s advice. She later decides to let the advice “to not be moved” be a guiding force for her life. She decided to not be moved and be her authentic self.

This book is a reminder to us all to continue to be our authentic selves. Brene takes time to explore the popular saying “You’re either with us or against us”. She brings to the reader’s attention the division this statement creates. It forces one to pick a side. It forces a person to make a choice on where they want to belong. The main theme and the title of the book, Braving the Wilderness, falls in line with this saying. The wilderness is a place where you don’t pick a side to belong to. You pick to belong to yourself knowing that this place of belonging will upset those who prefer you pick a side. This book inspires us to not be afraid to stand alone. It takes courage to stand alone. We have to say and do what we feel is right regardless of how others may feel. I recommend reading this book to help find the courage to brave the wilderness and stand alone.
